36. Edible Estates
International / Fritz Haeg
Edible Estates, founded by Los Angeles–based artist Fritz Haeg, is an ongoing initiative to replace domestic front lawns with kitchen gardens, allowing families to grow their own food. Haeg has overseen the remaking of more than a dozen gardens across the U.S. and in Europe, ranging from small suburban lawns to public housing estates in New York (pictured) and the U.K. Each garden is designed to respond to the unique characteristics of the site, the desires of owners, and the site’s history, climate, and geography. These simple, low-cost gardens promote a more productive use of the land between our homes and the street, and a closer relationship with neighbors, our food, and the natural environment.
