Dennis Wedlick

Dennis Wedlick, AIA, is the founder and co-owner of BarlisWedlick Architects, based in Manhattan and Hudson, New York.

Wedlick began his architectural career with a 12-year apprenticeship to the master architect Philip Johnson. During his time in Johnson’s office he worked on both residential and urban planning projects, and spearheaded the compilation of a vast archive of Johnson’s work. Johnson’s client-focused approach was an inspiration to Wedlick; today, BarlisWedlick Architects begins every project with a client wish list, and prides itself on a portfolio that represents the tastes, practical concerns and, ultimately, the dreams of its diverse client base.

In 1992, Wedlick founded Dennis Wedlick Architect LLC (the firm changed its name to BarlisWedlick Architects in 2013). The award-winning firm offers a full range of services: architecture, master planning, landscape and interior design. From the first, the firm established a reputation for its own brand of residential and community design: sustainable, expressive places to live and work that prize design, technology and craft.  A curator at the Cooper-Hewitt, the Smithsonian’s National Design Museum, described the firm’s work as containing “extraordinary amounts of poetry.”

Wedlick is a founding member of CORA, the Congress of Residential Architecture, a national trade organization dedicated to improving the field of residential architecture and educating the public. He is a frequent speaker on issues as general as how architecture can transform our built environment as well as specific ways we can improve the energy-efficiency of our homes and communities. Wedlick has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Parsons School of Design, and City College of New York.

Featured widely in the press, Wedlick is also the author of five books: The Good Home (2001); Good House Parts (2003); Designing the Good Home (2004); Good House Hunting: 20 Steps to Your Dream Home (2005), and Classic & Modern: Signature Styles (2013), which he co-authored with Alan Barlis, his partner in the firm.

Wedlick lives in Manhattan and Kinderhook, New York.
