Generally considered the province of engineers and design/build contractors, parking structures have long been a rote sort of project that is often ruled by the mandates of zoning laws, building codes, and the bottom line. Parking garages have recently garnered newfound design acclaim, but their potential to become centers for community gathering and technological trailblazers remains open for exploration. Architects can contribute significantly to integrating parking garages into the community fabric, improving the user experience, and supporting the urban continuum. This article originally published in the November 2012 print and digital editions of ARCHITECT magazine and is registered with AIA for 1 CEH. Take the course.
