Last week, we showed you photographs of the new Kimbell Art Museum building, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, that were taken by famed architectural photographer Robert Polidori. But his wasn't the only camera documenting the new pavilion: In September of this year, photographer Robert LaPrelle also shot the exterior of the new Piano pavilion, placing the new building in the context of the Louis Kahn-designed structure that has bought such architectural acclaim to the arts institution since it was completed in 1972. LaPrelle's photos show how the slightly arced glass panels in the roof structure on Piano's structure nod to, without mimicking, Kahn's iconic vaults, and the relationship between the two buildings across the 65-yard-wide lawn. But to see that and other connections between the buildings in person, people will have to wait for the public opening of the new pavilion on Nov. 27.
