This week and next, New York's Martha Graham Dance Company is performing a 1930s-era piece in front of a backdrop designed by Frank Gehry, FAIA, as part of a program called Shape&Design held at the city's Joyce Theater. The dance company describes the 1936 piece as "[a] stark, explosive response to the devastation and isolation that war leave in its wake." (The website has a video of the piece sans the Gehry addition.)
The company honored Gehry and Peter Arnell, who made a photo montage of the company, at an opening gala earlier this week, and is holding two more "Steps in the Street" performances with the Gehry collaboration. Tickets are available here.
