In late September, nine winners and 13 honorable mentions were announced for the first Lifecycle Building Challenge, a sustainable building design contest created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the American Institute of Architects, the Building Materials Reuse Association, and West Coast Green. Shown above: The groHome, a modular housing unit designed by Texas A&M University’s 2007 Solar Decathlon team; the design takes its cues from the open-source software movement and uses radio frequency identification tags to track building components.
