Taking advantage of the existing foot traffic, cities such as Washington, D.C. and New York City are transforming its train stations into mixed-use destinations to encourage off-peak tourism. Union Station is set to undergo a $10 billion facelift beginning in 2019 in Washington, D.C., and Penn Station in New York City will receive a new 255,000-square-foot train hall to be completed by 2020.
