Armstrong World Industries announced the winners of its inaugural Ideas 2 Reality (i2r) design competition, which was open to unbuilt (idea) or built (reality) projects that used Armstrong Commercial Ceiling & Flooring products. The competition was conducted in conjunction with the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). Four winners were selected from nearly 140 submissions from across the U.S. The idea and reality winners in the Commercial Ceiling & Wall Systems category were, respectively: Dyer, Ind.-based Interior Image Group for Destinations, a café that incorporated an accent canopy in an indoor patio area; and Providence, R.I.-based Vision 3 Architects for integrating a contemporary wood and metal ceiling detail throughout NaviNet’s Beaux-Arts headquarters building in Boston.
The idea and reality winners in the Commercial Flooring category were, respectively: Adam Rohaly, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., for VCT Floor Mosaic, which reused surplus 2–inch-square VCT samples to create an image mosaic; and New Castle, Pa.-based Eckles Architecture & Engineering for McIntyre Elementary School, which featured a trolley track pattern created from VCT flooring in building corridors.
An online vote determined the idea winners, each of which will receive $2,500. Reality winners will receive a trophy and catered firm-wide event, and were selected by IIDA judges Anne-Marie Gianoudis, Gresham Smith and Partners; Susanne Molina, Klawiter and Associates; and Stacy Reed, Gensler. All winners will also receive an Apple iPad 2.
