B.Ed., B.ARCH., B.Int. Arch., Master of Community Planning, Master of Landscape Architecture

Samuel Mockbee died eight years ago, and his close collaborator D.K. Ruth, sadly, passed away in August—yet the world-famous design/build studio they founded together in 1993, the Rural Studio, is still going strong. Now led by Andrew Freear, Auburn students continue to pour their smarts and sweat equity into high-quality community projects in and near rural Hale County, Ala. But Auburn isn’t a one-program school: It maintains an active Urban Studio, based in Birmingham, and offers study-abroad opportunities in Rome, Florence, and Turkey.

Architecture students at Louisiana Tech learn with their hands as well as with their heads, participating in a range of design/build activities (including annual projects supporting North Central Louisiana Habitat for Humanity). They also have access to an impressive suite of rapid prototyping and digital fabrication equipment: 3D printers and scanners, a laser cutter, and CNC milling, routers, and plasma cutter. The school supports a Community Design Assistance Center, which allows students to have a role in Louisiana Tech's own planning and design initiatives. There are summer study-abroad opportunities in Germany (Berlin) and Italy (Florence).
