Scale model of the Olympic cauldron, 2012

Learn about the man behind the 2012 Olympic Games cauldron at the Victoria and Albert Museum's Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary. British designer Thomas Heatherwick, 42, has turned everything from that petal-inspired Olympic cauldron, to the new two-story London buses, to a rolling bridge over the Grand Union Canal in London into design gold. Even fashion hasn't been left untouched: in 2004, he designed a bag made of one zipper for Longchamp. And who can forget his Seed Cathedral for the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010? For his design wizardry, Heatherwick has received the Prince Philip Designers Prize and the London Design Medal; and in 2004, he became the youngest practitioner to be appointed a Royal Designer for Industry. His first retrospective will feature photos and models, including a model of one of the petals that formed the cauldron. Through Sept. 30. • vam.ac.uk
