Firm DescriptionThe entrepreneurial spirit and high energy of the early 20th century architect Albert Kahn continues today as Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. (Kahn). Since 1895, the firm has designed over 450,000 completed projects in the major automotive, manufacturing, mixed-use, healthcare, higher education, corporate and municipal markets. Kahn is well known for the ability to approach designs with a pioneering spirit of collaboration between architecture and engineering with the health and well-being of the inhabitants a key concern. Recognized for the invention of the first steel reinforced concrete building system in the world, the firm is still making a powerful impact in architecture with their expertise in designing for extreme conditions and ability to explore inventive new material and construction methodologies. Currently, Kahn’s global reach serves many longstanding clients such as Volvo, Chrysler, Ford, Henry Ford Health Systems, Wayne County, Lawrence Tech and the Detroit Zoological society and many others with offices in Detroit and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Kahn, with almost 900 Detroit historical structures in its portfolio is positioned to make a significant contribution to the rebirth of Detroit in the redevelopment of the city’s many magnificent historical structures; many of them originally designed by the firm.
Kahn’s President and CEO, Alan Cobb, FAIA, an alumni of Lawrence Tech, directed the Taubman Complex project as Executive Architect. With Cobb’s guidance, the team of Morphosis/ Kahn explored innovative material usage to bring a new formulated carbon fiber to the built environment. It is fitting that the first usage of this material in architecture is used to create multi- disciplined learning labs for LTU a university that is highly regarded for its many accomplished graduates and its multi-discipline approach to learning.
