ARCHITECT Editorial Internships
WHAT WE OFFER
Internships are available on a rolling basis for learning from top editors and doing fact-checking, researching, writing, and editing for ARCHITECT magazine, and its sister magazines ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING, ECO-STRUCTURE, and METALMAG.
You will be involved with a wide range of projects, from the glamorous to the granular. You will become familiar with the varied pace of a magazine's production schedule. No two internships are the same. Interns who shine at the simpler tasks may have the opportunity to contribute to larger projects. We want our interns to walk away with an inner knowledge of the industry and strong clips that they have earned.
Projects might include the following: fact-checking stories, proofreading articles, updating databases, writing sidebars, researching writing assignments, conducting interviews and investigations, responding to queries, clipping and filing potential story leads, assisting with social media coverage, assisting with multimedia projects, and light administrative tasks.
ABOUT YOU
The ideal candidate is eager, independent, and wants to learn. Enduring enthusiasm, curiosity and a love of the written word are essential prerequisites for the position. (Typing ability is a must). You will be called upon regularly to use your excellent verbal communication skills and to demonstrate a helpful attitude. Attention to detail, even a perverse obsession with it, will come in handy. Successful candidates commonly have previous editorial experience at school magazines, newspapers, or journals, (but no previous experience is necessary); strong interest in magazine writing; good phone and research skills; and the ability to juggle several assignments at once. Either in college, or within five years of graduating is preferred.
Experience with InCopy, K4, and content-management systems such as Tridion is helpful but not required. Digital photography or video experience is helpful but not required.
Interns must be located in the Washington, D.C., area during the internship. The position requires a commitment of a certain number hours (to be decided upon between intern and editor) in our office, during business hours; schedules can be tailored.
COMPENSATION
Unpaid; students may take the internship for college credit, although the burden falls on the student to fulfill credit requirements. Successful completion of program is awarded with a $500 stipend.
