Architect, architectural historian, and urbanist Leonardo Benevolo died on Jan. 5 from an illness. He is best known for his prolific writing such as the History of Modern Architecture and his design and planning around Italy; his work includes Bologna’s Fiera District and historic center, the of town Ascoli Piceno, and the city of Monza. Benevolo was also a member of the reconstruction planning committee following the Vajont Dam disaster of 1963 that killed almost 2,000 people.
In 2003 Benevolo received of the Gold Medal of Merit for Culture and Art from the Italian government.
