One half of the famous, Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese firm SANAA, Kazuyo Sejima, has been tapped to design an express train by the large Japanese construction/hospitality/infrastructure/real estate conglomerate Seibu Group. (The company’s slogan: “Smiles Ahead.” Yup, seriously.) The mirrored exterior of the train car, reports Designboom’s Philip Stevens, is intended to reflect its surroundings to better blend into both the urban and rural areas it travels through. The interior is designed as a relaxed living room-type space, “intended to serve as a communal destination in its own right, offering more than just a means of transportation,” writes Stevens. Sejima’s train is expected to be completed in 2018.
