Designed by father-son architectural team John and Wilson Ely as the headquarters for the American Insurance Company in Newark, N.J., 15 Washington St. is a neoclassical 17-story tower that began crumbling years ago. The building, located in Washington Park, also once served as Rutgers University’s law school. But the building was in such poor condition that law school students protested and in 2000, the school closed the deteriorating skyscraper. Although Rutgers officials proposed new uses for the building over the years, none of the renovations were ever realized—until now. Last week, Rutgers unveiled an $83 million, 263,000-square-foot renovation, which converts the building into a residence hall for undergraduate and graduate students.
