UC Merced’s 1-megawatt solar array produces half of the campus’s electricity when the sun is shining. The campus goal is to be net-zero energy, zero waste and net-zero emissions by 2020.

The campus plan envisions a 25,000-student car-free campus, with 6.25 million square feet of LEED Gold research and administrative space, housing for 12,500, and an adjacent University Community providing 5,000 jobs within walking distance to the Academic Core.

Set to open in 2014, the LEED Platinum–targeted Science and Engineering 2 features research and instructional labs and a solar-paneled, shaded promontory that can serve as a event venue.
