Rice Fergus Miller Studio and Office

The Sears Automotive Center in Bremerton, Wash., sat derelict and vacant for 30 years before being transformed.

After a two-year renovation with a focus on passive energy use, water conservation, and indoor air quality, it is now the LEED Platinum-certified home for hte architecture firm.

Natural ventilation is used throughout the space, and an energy-recovery ventilator turns on when carbon dioxide levels are twoo high.

Interior finishes were kept to a minimum to reduce off-gassing of VOCs, and salvaged Douglas fir beams from the original building were reused as a decorative feature.

Cozy, contemplative areas for meetings are sprinkled throuhgout workspaces.
