Project DescriptionFROM THE ARCHITECTS:
The project aims to introduce a sustainable mix of uses on the site comprising the Collective’s co-living units, a serviced-apartment hotel, employment and cultural uses and incorporating amenities and outdoor spaces. The ambition is to create of a mixed-use community in Stratford as well as fully optimise the use of the site.
The scheme is shaped to directly respond to its context. The proposed massing has been deliberately articulated to mark a pivotal location in Stratford at the gateway between two distinct character zones: the High Street, rhythmically punctuated by tall buildings to the south-west, and the Conservation Area, flanked by tall development, to the north-east.
At ground the Proposed Development will transform the Site from a largely impenetrable and inactive block into an area that will facilitate connectivity throughout the Site, opening sustainable active uses onto the High Street and making a public destination along the Channelsea River. In the sky, the Proposal introduces a publicly-accessible free viewing gallery and pop-up restaurant event space with views over the Olympic Park and London
The architectural composition and expression reflects the unique nature of the typology it contains. The identity of the scheme is not conferred through a flamboyant shape or through an overwrought facade, but rather by its collective event spaces, which form the lifeblood of the building. The scheme, therefore, has a simple, calm and dignified facade and a simple, slender silhouette. Against this calm composition, an elevated event space pavilion stands out as an extraordinary counterpoint; an expressive beacon in the sky.
