Project DescriptionFROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Located at Carmichael Road in an upmarket area of Mumbai, Carmichael Residences provides a tranquil oasis from the energy of the city and connects with the lush vegetation that surrounds the property. At 21 stories, the tower offers uninterrupted views of the city and ocean beyond, and with 28 units, it offers residents an array of lifestyle amenities, terraces, and parking.
Taking cues from its immediate environment, SOM designed the building as a series of gardens that extend through the tower. Residents arrive to a serene garden lobby with scented flowers, running water, and lush plantings. A health and fitness garden provides interior and exterior spaces for exercise and meditation while the roof features a garden with an infinity pool. There are two units per floor, each with an area of 2,000 square feet. The open flexible layout of each apartment allows for different spatial configurations, and units may be combined into a single, larger space if desired.
Targeting IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) Green Homes certification, the design of Carmichael Residences integrates several features that contribute to the creation of sustainable living environments. By opening the facade to the west, the building maximizes ocean views and breezes for the primary living spaces. The facade consists of high-performance glazing and is complemented by deep projection shades and operable wooden sunscreens that mitigate heat gain from the western orientation. These screens enable ample natural ventilation and render the building's exterior in a visually interesting way that changes with the occupants' individual customization. A palette of local and natural materials such as hardwoods and granite, along with with solar hot water heating, rainwater harvesting, and onsite sewage treatment for greywater, add to the sustainable elements of the building.
