Project DescriptiondesignLAB recently completed construction on the addition to the Paul Rudolph-designed Claire T. Carney Library at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The University's goal for the project was to "transform the 1972 library into a modern hub of knowledge creation, dissemination, and interaction," envisioning the library "as the intellectual and scholarly hub of the campus."
designLAB architects was responsible for the 160,000 SF renovation and designing the 27,000 SF, two-story addition. The expansion is located directly beneath the Science & Engineering Lecture Halls (also by Rudolph) and serves as a center for social interaction and intellectual discourse. The addition provides the library with a new multi-purpose entry to the building, complete with a gallery, a new main circulation desk, an adaptable lecture hall, a cafe and gathering area, as well as group study spaces. The library expansion accommodates 212,500 volumes to suit the grwoth of the library collection over the next 20 years.
