Project Description

This project is located in the town of Guardamar del Segura, in the province of Alicante. This town, in the same way that most of the coast, expanded towards the sea in the second half of last century to find a tourism-based economy. The area on which we work includes most of the first edificatoria line the promenade. The architecture is strongly influenced by seasonality. The project investigates what aspects influence the lifestyles of the place, of how architecture is a partner and possible ways in which we can intervene.
The timing is perhaps one of the most notorious aspects, during non-holiday months a little walk around the area shows us the sharp decline in economic and residential activity, which occurs in many coastal municipalities. This leads us to believe that the economic model based on tourism is not as successful as can happen in Benidorm (which would be one of the exceptions). Therefore there is a problem, a problem that must be analyzed to find a target project that fits the architectural context.
The analysis of the problem is on three levels: typological, experiential and atmospheric.
First analysis of edification and urban typologies is vital to understand what type of users can live here during the summer months, when it comes to families. A town planning model used was closed blocks arranged perpendicularly to walk, no more conventional models as the towers were.
All this information should be enumerated through some means to value the results and to better understand roughly how people live, how they are organized and such architectures. The number and type of rooms in each dwelling, the type of stairs (inside outside), balconies (if allowed or were private communication) and covers are valued classes.
Moreover, the experiential aspect seeks to know first hand how the people understand how to live on the seafront. To do an action was performed to call the attention of those who had a normal day during non-holiday period. It was decided to do it this way so that people become more involved in the process of gathering information. The action consisted of organizing small games of dominoes in the walk, so whenever one of the participants performed a play had to have some relevant aspect of how to live in the place.
Finally, we wanted to include an analysis of certain atmospheric qualities, as we tend to ignore the environmental aspects in an architectural context. And we reduce it to an analysis of how the views or sunlight. In our case the weather conditions not only are given by the location but also by their own existing architecture amending atmospheric conditions, which differ for example in a courtyard to how they are on the street, or the fact that next to a window of underground parking our body temperature is changing. The issues discussed were the wind currents and how the sand dragged into the streets and how humidity affects domestic habits.
Following the results, we realized that the strong seasonality framing makes this place even by the native residents of Guardamar, the promenade be relegated to the background and activity exists only during the holidays. But there are other people who live here year round, and also there are other users who come to excursions to walk. And besides, which it was to be expected, they are mostly elderly people.
So it was that the way to revitalize the seafront was transforming it into a great center of dispersed day in the area specializing in the elderly for tourism this time. So in the summer months were allowed to what already exists.
The proposed addition to the residence and health care, activities will arise along the whole area of scattered. Some of them will be led by the residents themselves, experts in some of them, like fishing. Further activities will be managed through a mobile application.
In terms of design, they will develop two types of activities that work large scales and small scales. The first was made by way of microsurgery architectural, interior spaces and modifying the latter at a more global level, from the adaptation to the existing to the extension thereof.
A small-scale leisure spaces for temporary residents develop. Within a housing changes arising in the disposal of the rooms, so they can return to their original state and are more versatile by moveable panels and separators. Leading to Casino Aging promenade. Moreover one of the courtyards for their geometry and arrangement of the balconies becomes a comedy theater.
On a larger scale activities take place relate to body care and sport. The walk is extended by an arm out toward the sea where pools are located, with seawater and a pedestrian zone, it is a marine spa that integrates with the existing public space. Beside him, in one of the buildings he returns to the small scale, where the interiors are changed to result in saunas and rest areas Spa.
And finally, in terms of sport, a major scale is also used, but this time, spaces and infrastructure are located around a drawing of apples and apparently unused spaces such as parking lots and decks. Uns great platform as a Moebius strip runs through an entire building so it can be used as bike circuit, where changes in body temperature due to atmospheric conditions. The circuit is designed to take advantage of these conditions and to reach strategic locations from which you can enjoy a nice view or make a barbecue.
