Project Description

Loyola’s Institute of Environmental Sustainability (IES) strives to create solutions to the stress on our planet's natural resources, expanding knowledge in the service of humanity through teaching, conducting research, and sponsoring outreach activities on pressing environmental issues. These issues include global climate change, the food production and distribution system, conserving and recovering biodiversity, restoring ecosystem function, identifying emerging environmental contaminants, and privatizing natural resources. The Institute endeavors to develop a conservation ethic, increasing Loyola’s campus energy efficiency and transforming our consumption behaviors to conserve natural resources for the common good, for future generations, and for all forms of life on the planet.

The Institute is headquartered in a new, state-of-the-art facility on Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus and includes clean energy and biodiesel production labs, a green house, two aquaponics systems, an EcoDome, classrooms, a 412-bedroom residence hall, and is one of the greenest facilities in Chicagoland. Designed by Devon Patterson from the architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB), the institute’s new home boasts a number of cutting-edge sustainable features, including the largest geothermal heating and cooling installation in Chicago, rainwater harvesting, and high-efficiency heat-recovery technology.
