Project DescriptionMultifunctional building “Kerckebosch” in Zeist, The Netherlands
In the wooded area of Kerckebosch in Zeist a multifunctional building has been developed. The building functions as a key building within the whole housing development.
The building contains sporting facilities in the basement for the municipal of Zeist. On ground level social and medical functions are based in an open and transparent level.
The 1st and 2nd floors are care-related properties into three living areas for the 1st and independent on the 2nd floor (total 24 care apartments and 18 independent care homes).
The apartments on the 2nd floor have a roof landscape in the
inside area with its own environment.
On a triangular wooded lot on one of the main roads of the area a meeting place in the neighborhood with a visible character which blends into the wooded area was a theme to the task. On the site we tried to maintain the most valuable trees. The trees that shape the quality of the site. This has picked up our office and translated into a plan like a folding, curved building shape with a façade that folds around the existing tree groups so that trees were saved and created natural setting.
The open, transparent total glass facade levitates the upper levels above ground floor. The façade basically consists of a bronze anodized aluminum die-cut and profiled
plating which gives the bark structure and curves further developed and strengthened.
Through this semi-transparent treatment of the facade it is pleasant to stay on
the balconies of the apartments from high without losing the privacy aspects. (The
green balcony fences strengthen those natural atmosphere). It generates a diffuse treatment
of the façade and less hard perception. By anodizing the façade the weather and light influences the overall perception of the building. From dark brown to almost
yellowish gold are the colors. In this way, the building adapts perfectly with the changing colors in nature. Even the eaves seem to fade in the air, as if it were the top
leaves on the tree.
