Project Description

Responding to the increased demands for Cancer Services in the community, a plan to consolidate and upgrade existing Oncology Services to one convenient location for patients, families and providers was developed. The planning process began in 2008 and was completed in April 2011 when the new facility opened for services. The scope of the project did evolve over time and additional services were included in the building project. The completed project is now home to state-of-the-art, cutting edge Radiation Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging, Patient Resource Center and Cancer Support activities such as Patient Navigation, Acupuncture, and Lymphedema Services, Medical Infusion Center, Cancer Family Risk Assessment Programs, and Cancer Clinical Trial activities. Office space for physician practices has also been included in the building plan and represent Breast Surgery, Medical Oncology and Women’s Cancer Services.

Along with the challenges of connecting a significant structure to a busy hospital, our Design Team was also greatly concerned with the comfort of the patient. Many of the patient diagnosis are fundamentally intimidating. The place where these people go for their care should not be, even when the realities of the structure and needs of the services provided could create an daunting space. One primary goal was to use as many nature and green elements in the overall design. The site plan considered the sun’s orientation and added many exterior gardens as focal points. Interior Healing Gardens and nature photography was used throughout,as a soothing effect for patients undergoing treatment. The use of natural wood, stone veneer, and river rocks were also incorporated into the design.

The project was developed on a fast track basis, with documents being developed for foundations and structure to allow construction to begin while the building envelope and corresponding interior fit-out documents were still in process. An additional programming considerations were necessitated by virtue of a partnership association with another Regional Cancer Research and Treatment Center.
