Project Description

Project Of The Year And Grand, Kitchen In A Custom Home—3,000 To 5,000 Square Feet

This serene home sits on the line where the Great Plains and the city of Boulder converge with the foothills of the Rockies. The clients, both avid rock climbers, wanted “a place to come home where they could close the door on the city side of the house and open up the mountain side to the west,” explains architect E.J. Meade. The kitchen, being the spot where life continues after the work day is done, is one of many realms designed to facilitate just that sort of unwinding. Scaled to accommodate both intimate dinners and large parties, it anchors an expansive living/entertainment area with views of the western sunset over the Flatirons. Integrated appliances and simple cabinet faces ensure that the space does not detract from the splendor of what’s outside. At the same time, the design brings the colors and textures of the landscape in with a blend of limestone walls, marble and honed Italian quartzite countertops, rift-sawn walnut casework, and brushed aluminum cabinet faces with etched glass inserts. Of course, any home intended to commune with nature would not be complete without an al fresco component. The entire space spills easily onto an outdoor patio (one of its glass walls even slides away to create a pass-through to an outdoor seating bar), at which point the smooth Pennsylvania bluestone under foot takes on a slightly rougher flamed finish to prevent slipping, explains builder Richard Sands. It’s a subtle transition and just one of many impeccable details that make this home a big winner.
