Project Description

Nestled between the lush Alabama countryside and the Coosa River, sits the new Wind Creek Resort in the city of Wetumpka. This $246 million property is the second of the Poarch Band of Creek Indian's prosperous Wind Creek gaming resort brand. Totaling over 500,000 square feet, the 283-room-hotel offers multiple food and beverage options, conference and meeting space, an active pool area that also serves as an entertainment venue, and a gaming floor featuring an exotic aquarium center bar.
The design intent expresses the Wind Creek brand in ways that are both familiar and fresh. The concept, “shaped through time”, drove the design in two distinct ways: the prominence of wind, water, and nature in tribal culture, and the significance of the “ribbon dance” as it relates to the tribe's heritage. Just as the currents of wind and water wear away at the earth to reveal layers of age, so do the interiors at this four-diamond property. The walls suggest a strength and mass, but at times gradually peel away, shift, or fragment to reveal a new layer that's fresh and vibrant. This juxtaposition of materials and finishes help establish an inviting, approachable environment for all with an air of intrigue and whimsy.
The lobby serves as the epicenter of the property and guests can instantly connect with the cultural design elements upon arrival. The most prominent feature, a sky of ribbons, captures the essence of the wind and water elements and playfully engages and directs the visitor as it pours, flows, and ripples from one end of the property to the other. By using a color changing lighting technique on a variety of sheer metallic mesh fabric and crystals, a dynamic and fluid succession of ever-changing ambiance is created. A dialogue between the sky of ribbons and the custom-poured Epoxy Terrazzo flooring encourages movement throughout the hotel.
As guests enter the open entertainment floor their eyes focus to the dynamic center bar, which is a 360° aquarium housing exotic marine life, surrounded by lounge seating. Four ribbon features undulate at different heights and are woven around smoky quartz and amber stone lighting features resembling wind chimes.
The VIP lounge boasts scenic views of the river with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors, which also connect to the outdoor terrace and pool area. A double-sided fireplace is framed by the glass wall, providing warmth and ambience to the lounge and outdoor terrace. Three-dimensional stone tiles, luxurious velvet furnishings and crystal chandeliers, make the VIP guest feel an elevated sense of comfort and luxury.
A subdued version of the "ribbon dance" continues throughout the dining venues and hotel rooms in the carpeting, wall coverings and accessories. Clean lines and soft hues establish a calm atmosphere; a respite from the action and excitement of the gaming floor, where guests can relax and wind down for the evening.
The 120-seat Fire Steakhouse features an exhibit kitchen where guests can enjoy watching their dinner being prepared, while soaking in the picturesque views of the river from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The 2-story wine cellar is displayed on a backlit orange resin, creating a warm glow throughout the space.
The 24-Hour Grill restaurant offers a casual, but hip experience in a cozy space. The loose horizontal stripes or "ribbons" on the entry facade leads diners inside the space to open seating.
Taking advantage of the natural landscape and strategic siting of the property, every single guestroom and suite boasts stunning views of the river. Playing off the natural features, designers decided to let the colors of the changing sky become the dramatic centerpiece and 'pop of color' within the room and suite experiences. These clean, contemporary interior spaces feature light, serene tones paired with cleansing textures and materials—a striking contrast to the deep blue, purple and orange of the endless skies beyond guestroom windows.
The "ribbon dance" theme is embodied in the Penthouse Suite through the linear bands that define the physical space. Meticulously detailed on the bedside light fixtures, the shower tiles, the drapery textures and the custom flooring patterns, the ribbon motif inspires the Penthouse finishes in luxe detail. For the VIP guests, the natural, artisanal materials speak to authenticity, hand craft and quality while creating a glamorous, sensual environment that feels as if custom designed especially for them. The designer's recipe is highly effective — successfully pairing relaxing, comfortable "havens" intentionally designed to be calm and subdued, with the active gaming floor areas designed to be more expressive and festive.
VIP suite guests also have access to the SkyBar, an intimate space catering only to the suite floors. Rising 20 stories high, this dreamy gathering space features opaque interior paneling that seemingly floats up the wall and ceiling, creating a cloud-like centerpiece. The deep shades of blue and purple found in the suites are carried over in the fabric colors of SkyBar's luxurious leather and velvet furnishings. A dazzling touch of shimmer from the metal and glass bar tiles creates an almost jewel-box feel to the space, setting the right mood for intimate gatherings - a coveted spot to have a beverage and take in the expansive views from the outdoor terrace.
