FROM THE RIBA ROYAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD, 2006:
Toyo Ito is partly known for exploring and creating new concepts of living in centers of population, a strand of his work which can be seen in domestic buildings such as Silver Hut, for which he was awarded the Architecture Institute of Japan Award in 1986. The project is also an example of Ito’s interest in symbolism and the exploration of minimalist methods. The building was completed in 1984.
