The First Tee of Prince George's County

College Park, MD United States

WNUK SPURLOCK Architecture

Project Description

First Tee is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation whose mission is to promote character development through golf. To address these goals, this educational/training facility at the Paint Branch Golf Course contains golf simulator spaces, an indoor putting green, a classroom, and various administrative spaces. The building’s site is separated from the golf course’s main clubhouse by the property’s entrance drive—the massing combination effectively creating a gateway to the golf course. Located on a flood plane, the building is raised on piers and allows for golf cart storage below. Accessibility is addressed by a ramp that simultaneously hangs from the roof while wrapping around the building’s perimeter. The configuration emphasizes accessibility and enables views in all directions. The design uses sustainable design principles such as sun louvers and overhangs. Renewable materials are simple and modest to reduce cost and accommodate expected high traffic use.
