This week, we’re sharing projects from China to Denver and South Korea, with several stops in between. In addition to the projects that we cover in detail, we highlight work that architecture firms share with us every day through Project Gallery, the user-generated portion of ARCHITECT’s website. To date, we have more than 15,000 projects.

Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED)

“The new office space supports major culture shifts within the company through a reallocation of square footage toward more common and shared spaces, along with high tech spaces to accommodate the infusion of significant technology systems in operations.”

Sculptural Canopy at Sungang MixC, Shenzhen, China
10 DESIGN

“The sweeping form spirals into a loop and pulls visitors into the retail street. Two large office towers frame the edges of the retail street, and the canopy is used as a mechanism to create a comfortable pedestrian scale. The metallic skin is highly reflective to add vibrancy in both sunlight and the glow of early evening.”

After 60 years of continuous use, an extensive rehabilitation of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Headquarters is finally complete. Originally designed by Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture, the same firm was chosen to complete the rehabilitation.

Sacramento Municipal Utility District Headquarters Rehabilitation, Sacramento, Calif.
Dreyfus & Blackford

“After 60 years of continuous use, an extensive rehabilitation of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District Headquarters is finally complete. Renovation of this landmark mid-century modern design has brought this iconic 146,000-square-foot building into the 21st Century while artfully addressing the concerns of the preservation community.”

Macau Central Library, Macau, China
Mecanoo

“The façade pattern acts as an extension of the bookshelves, from the inside out, from stack to protective shell. The uniform skin wraps the library volume and opens up like a book page to the main entrance facing the Tap Seac square. This welcoming gesture is an essential part of the relationship between library and square.”

The Garage Project, Seoul, South Korea
G/O Architecture

“‘The Garage Project’s purpose is to share parking space[s] that account for more than 80% of the first floor of Sinsa public community center with local residents and people visiting Garosu-gil.”

Brian Vanden Brink

Weston Meadow, Weston, Mass.
Catalano Architects

“Sited on a north facing slope, the house was thoughtfully designed to allow an abundance of natural southern sunlight to enter the northern facing spaces. This environmentally friendly home uses an earth coupled pump system for efficient central cooling and heating throughout the year.”

The House, Chruszczobród, Poland
Gornik Architects

“The house is surrounded by fields, meadows and forests. The object consists of three simple ridge roofed buildings shaped like traditional houses. They were functionally divided into garage, art studio, and home building[s]. The main conditions for this project we took into consideration were the functional arrangement [and the] plot’s exposure to sunlight and topography. The wide driveway and the garage emphasize public wide-open area.”

Four Corners House, Maine
AAmp Studio

“Four Corners House is a 2,300-square-foot vacation home sited along Maine’s thickly wooded and rugged Bold Coast region. Derived from a prototypical nine-square grid, the home forms a courtyard with communal space on one side—such [as] kitchen, living and dining— and private spaces on the other, such as bedrooms, bathrooms and studies.”

James Florio

Motherhouse, Denver, Colo.
Independent Architecture

Located in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Denver, Colo., Motherhouse catches the eye with its candy-striped exterior and abundant gables, challenging the bounds of conventional, suburban architecture in the U.S. Designed by the local firm Independent Architecture, the 3,100-square-foot house draws inspiration from the work of German architect O.M. Ungers and the visual impact of conventional parts in excess. The project, however, remains livable and functional. “I hoped that, even if people weren’t interested in any of the intellectual architecture issues, that they would like it as a house,” says Independent Architecture founder Paul Andersen, AIA. Read more about the project, featured in ARCHITECT’s March issue, here.
