Today, the Trust for the National Mall announced the finalists from stage one of the National Mall Design Competition.
From more than 1,200 entrants, a panel of architects, historians, critics, and advocates selected six competitors for three distinct competitions. These finalists, who were selected on the strength of their prior work and design philosophy, will advance to the second stage.
The competition falls under three categories, organized in alignment with the National Mall grounds that up for redesign: Union Square, the Washington Monument Grounds at Sylvan Theater, and Constitution Gardens. Teams did not submit designs during stage one. The finalists competing for each category are listed below.
Three teams were given more than one shot at redesigning the Mall: Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Hood Design (Union Square and Sylvan Theater); OLIN with Weiss/Manfredi Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism (Sylvan Theater and Constitution Gardens); and Rogers Marvel Architects with PWP Landscape Architecture (Union Square and Constitution Gardens).
