  • During a seminar at the 2010 International Builders' Show, housing experts sought to bridge the generation gap and explain the differences and similarities between the two demographic groups who are impacting housing design.

  • The National Association of Home Builders and the U.S. Green Building Council have locked horns over which of their respective green building standards should dominate residential construction. This confrontation, regardless of its outcome, presents another opportunity for pro dealers to stake their claim in a burgeoning trend toward eco-friendlier home building that, if more states have their way, will be mandated.

  • Voluntary. Flexible. Market driven. National. That's how the National Association of Home Builders touted the launch of its trademarked National Green Building Program during the International Builders' Show in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday. That launch includes a new Web site that builders can eventually use to score the design of their houses to the specifications of green standards that the association is currently seeking approval of from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It also includes a training program for the army of verifiers this program is going to need to certify projects submitted by builders and developers.

  • The home building industry is finally embracing energy efficiency, if February's International Builders' Show (IBS) in Orlando, Fla., was any indication. It sometimes seemed like every manufacturer among the convention's 1,900 exhibitors was touting the energy-saving properties of its products. Numerous seminars told builders about "green" advances in everything from solar panels to water heaters, and how to build environmentally friendly houses. The two NAHB-sponsored show homes were certified by the Florida Green Building Coalition and were Energy Star?rated.
