The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) found a permanent home in downtown Los Angeles in 2011 and a best friend in Gilmore City in 2013.
Tom Gilmore, a SCI-Arc trustee and Los Angeles developer, has given the school a $1 million gift to support a Gilmore City Chair for the school's design and architecture faculty. Gilmore, who is best known for his work in acquiring and rehabilitating historic buildings in the Old Bank District and other Downtown Los Angeles neighborhoods, has been a SCI-Arc trustee since 2001.
“Design, architecture and cities have played a defining role in my life, and these interests originally led me to SCI-Arc," Gilmore said in a release. "As I began to consider my gift, I wanted to acknowledge these influences in a meaningful way. The idea of creating a named chair, the Gilmore City Chair, seemed like a natural fit.”
Gilmore will deliver a lecture at SCI-Arc on Wednesday, Feb. 13, to share what he sees as the research focus for the Gilmore City Chair.
