The AIA has picked its next leader: Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, will serve as the 2013 AIA vice president/president-elect and the 2014 AIA president.
Dreiling currently serves as the executive director of the Richmond, Va.–based Virginia Center for Architecture. She has held other leadership positions in the AIA, including secretary (2011–12) and national vice president (2000). From 2000 to 2009, she held various positions at AIA National.
As an architect, she headed two Roanoke, Va.–based firms: the Plum Studio and the Dreiling Partnership Architects. She studied architecture at the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
“While it may be tempting to focus on today, we must place a preponderance of our attention to the future—on where society, technology and this future will be in five, 10, or more years,” she said in a release. “We can step forward to envision and advance a new reality: a reality in which we hold not only the capability, but also confidence, to be the architects of change, the architects of community, the architects of culture.”
