On July 1, architect Carme Pinós, Hon. FAIA, of Barcelona-based Estudio Carme Pinós released the design for the fifth-annual MPavilion in Melbourne, Australia. Commissioned by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, this year's pavilion features latticed, timber panels that shelter three sets of tiered seating, all supported by a steel portal frame. The latticed roof allows sunlight into the pavilion while simultaneously shading visitors.
Pinós' scheme encourages dialogue on human experience and interaction. "MPavilion 2018 is a place for people to experience with all their senses—to establish a relationship with nature, but also a space for social activities and connections. Whenever I can, I design places where movements and routes intersect and exchange, spaces where people identify as part of a community, but also feel they belong to universality," said Pinós in the same release.
Founded in 2014, the Naomi Milgrom Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with goals to enrich Australian life through engagement in fine art, architecture, and design. Each year the foundation commissions an architecture firm to design a temporary pavilion for the city’s historic Queen Victoria Gardens. “Carme Pinós’ philosophy of community closely aligns with MPavilion’s own mission to facilitate meaningful dialogue about the role of design and architecture, and what it means to foster socially inclusive cities in the context of design and the built environment," said founder Naomi Milgrom in the release. "I’m excited to see Carme’s MPavilion come to life, and to also see the new collaborations and discussions that unfold through her vision.”
For the second year, MPavilion is calling for public proposals to the program's events lineup. Submissions can include talks on Carme Pinós' architectural philosophy, dance, or musical performances exploring the built environment.
The previous four pavilions have since been relocated to new locations across Melbourne. The 2014 pavilion by Australian firm Sean Godsell Architects was moved to Melbourne’s Hellenic Museum; the 2015 pavilion by London-based architect Amanda Levete of AL_A is now sitting in Melbourne’s Docklands; the 2016 structure by Indian architect Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai has been relocated to the Melbourne Zoo, and last year's pavilion, designed by Netherlands-based architecture firm OMA, is now located at the Monash University’s Clayton's campus.
MPavilion 2018 will open to the public on Oct. 8 and will remain on view through Feb. 3.
