Neoclassic vs. Modernist. Beaux-Arts vs. Brutalist. In historic districts, the fight between new architectural arrivals and the historic building styles is often directly tied to a neighborhood’s value. This age-old battle fought by preservationist groups is up for exploration anew at the Dallas Center for Architecture’s Context/Contrast: New Architecture in Historic Districts. Featuring images of the buildings of New York’s Brooklyn Heights, Upper East Side, and SoHo, alongside a Dallas-centric look at preservation ordinances and the city’s own historic structures, the exhibit questions the impact that new architectural styles have on the neighboring historic homes, and what "appropriateness" means when building new homes in context.
