The U.S. Department of State has announced a request for proposals for institutes to organize the U.S. representation at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale.
The competition is open to any U.S. nonprofit organization, including museums, galleries, design centers, and schools of architecture and design. Independent curators may apply, too, but they must be affiliated with a nonprofit that will assume responsibility for the financials.
"Spontaneous Interventions"—the theme for the U.S. pavilion at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale, held in 2012—was organized by the Institute for Urban Design. The exhibit was curated by Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum curator David van der Leer, independent architecture critic Cathy Lang Ho, and ARCHITECT's own Ned Cramer.
The 14th Venice Architecture Biennale takes place June 7–Nov. 23, 2014, with a two-day press preview on June 5–6. The deadline for applications to organize the U.S. presence at the biennale is April 1.
