Max Bond Jr., the notable black architect and educator, died at 73 on Feb. 18. Born in Louisville, Ky., in 1935, Bond graduated with both his bachelor's and master's in architecture from Harvard University. Early in his career Bond worked in France and Ghana, returning to the U.S. to found Bond Ryder and Associates. Years later, Bond Ryder merged with Davis Brody and Associates to create Davis Brody Bond, which was associate architect for the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. The firm?working with the Freelon Group and Adjaye Associates?recently was selected by the Smithsonian Institution as one of six finalists to participate in a two-month design competition to determine which will submit a final proposal for the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
