2007 AIA GOLD MEDAL: A pupil of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, the native Chicagoan graduated Harvard GSD in 1942 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his service, he worked for Henry Dreyfuss in Los Angeles where he tried his hand in readymade residences. His Manhattan firm Edward Larrabee Barnes Associates was established in 1949—with his wife acting as an interior designer—and carried out projects such as the Walker Art Center, Dallas Museum of Art, and the IBM Building.
