Dr. King’s figure emerges from the “Stone of Hope.”
From the memorial’s forecourt, visitors pass through a masonry portal referred to as the “Mountain of Despair” on their way to the “Stone of Hope.” This vantage point also provides a view of the Jefferson Memorial across the Tidal Basin.
