Group Goetz Architects had already committed to design excellence in its AIA-award-winning central Washington, D.C., office space. When the firm decided to relocate to the Georgetown neighborhood, it wanted its new space to reflect not only its aesthetic principles but also its ecological ones, pursuing a LEED Platinum interior on one floor of a seven-story, non-LEED-certified building.
Much of the systems furniture was repurposed from the firm's previous space. Cleaned up and reoriented, the workstations sit in an area with daylight pouring in through the windows; high-efficiency light fixtures on sensors reduce unnecessary electricity usage. In contrast to the stark whiteness of the rest of the space, the waiting area is coated in black paint and film from 3M, with black leather furniture. The reception desk is one of the few pieces of completely new furniture in the space and was customized with FSC-certified walnut panels. Other new finishes, where possible, were chosen for high recycled content and local sourcing.
