The Light Fantastic

Berlin’s O2 World Arena, which opened in September, hosts ice hockey and basketball matches and concerts. Lighting designer LightWild, working with HOK Sport and JSK Architects, created a vivid media façade by taking advantage of the 117 vertical aluminum mullions that span the building. Each mullion has been wired with more than 2,000 LEDs, for a total of 280,800.

A new addition to Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, the 44-story Waterfront Tower opened in March. After sundown, its façade plays host to The Lights, a 4 millionsquare-foot-LED attraction that displays images including falling dice and the American flag to viewers as far as 10 miles away. Each floor has 700 feet of wraparound linear LED arrays attached to the mullions of the curtain wall.

Susan Narduli Studio collaborated with A2aMedia and architects A.C. Martin Partners and RMJM Hillier on a media screen for the Henry Madden Library, now under construction on California State University's Fresno campus. A 43-by-18-foot Mediamesh LED screen just inside the curtain wall (see rendering at left) will display a film by Narduli of a woman from the Table Mountain Rancheria tribe weaving a traditional basket.
