This year’s AIA Europe International Conference and Chapter Meeting, which will be held in Hamburg from Oct. 18–21, will feature a major presentation and guided tour of the HafenCity project, a redevelopment of former industrial land in Hamburg’s old harbor along the Elbe River. The largest inner-city redevelopment project currently in Europe, the project is based on a master plan by Dutch architect Kees Christiaanse and the German architecture and planning firm ASTOC. The project will effectively expand the size of the city of Hamburg by 40 percent, with 49 individual projects already completed and 35 others in planning or under construction. The conference will also feature projects by Zaha Hadid, Hon. FAIA, (the Hamburg River Walk) and Herzog & de Meuron (the Elbphilharmonie). For more details and to register, visit aiaeurope.org/events/2012/Hamburg.
