In 2003, the family of Scottish architect Basil Spence (1907–1976) gave The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland 40,000 items from the noted modernist’s archives. Now, a century after his birth, the commission and the National Galleries of Scotland have collaborated to celebrate Spence through this website, an exhibition currently making its way around the U.K., and a major retrospective that will open later this month.

So Albo Jeavons didn’t beat out Billie Tsien and Tod Williams for the chance to design the Barnes Foundation’s new Philadelphia digs. That’s no surprise, as the local artist wasn’t even on the shortlist. Nevertheless, the self-described anarchist has offered up the ArtJail, which combines the Barnes’ cultural focus with the services of the juvenile detention center that previously occupied the site.
