Located at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, the existing structure on this steep lot was one of the original ski homes built at the resort in the 1960's. What was once a "cool and groovy" typical little ski chalet was now, by comparison to newer construction, a dated, dark, impractical structure in complete violation of current building codes. The objective of the Blue Moose Ski Lodge project was to redesign the structure to create a desirable vacation home rental that would appeal to ski enthusiasts in the winter and National Park visitors in the summer. Chris Moulder, principle of Dubbe Moulder Architects, designed the renovation; removing the roof structure to allow natural light to fill the interior and adding on to the original three bedroom, two bathroom structure to create a home with 6 bedrooms and 6 1/2 bathrooms, which can accommodate up to 18 guests. The remodeled entry is now appropriately on the main floor, (rather than in the basement), where a wide circular stairway provides access to all three levels. The open floor plan on the main floor now allows the living, dining, and kitchen areas to flow and function together, giving the home the capacity to handle a large number of guests. Privacy is allowed for smaller groups who can utilize the new media room and game room. Attention was also given to outdoor living spaces that now include two large decks, a hot tub, and fire pit. On the exterior, the home was updated with a modern, curved roof line and a stacked stone ground level. The project was one of the firm's most extreme makeover projects to date and very rewarding in its successes of function and aesthetics.
