Boulder and Beautiful
The restaurateurs who own this Colorado home wanted a place to entertain and a quiet refuge for their family of six. They asked architect Chris Davis to design a house for both the parties and the peace they desired. The kitchen, at the center of the 8,000-square-foot home, lets the couple mingle with guests or spend time with family.
Four living spaces segue into the kitchen: The living room and dining room flank either end for convenient service without exposed prep areas. A den in the bedroom wing connects via a pocket door that can be closed for privacy. The key relationship, however, is between kitchen and screened porch. Sixteen-foot-wide glass doors open to a porch with a 3 replace and built-in grill. “When [the doors] are open,” says Davis, “it feels like an outdoor kitchen.”
A showpiece cooking space that sees a lot of traffic requires materials that stand up to use without losing their luster. Polished stained-concrete floors give way to an intricate wood inlay that defines the kitchen's work area. Glass upper cabinets and deep red glass backsplash tiles look sophisticated and are easy to clean. Dark-stained wood base cabinets anchor the light-filled room while mottled blond granite countertops blend with the home's pale stone walls. The rough-hewn walls recall the distant bluffs and add warmth to the polished architecture.
