The new municipal offices for the Boston School Department (BPS) form part of an ambitious plan by the city to rejuvenate the once-thriving district of Roxbury and central Dudley Square.

In collaboration with U.S. firm Sasaki Associates, Mecanoo designed the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building as a true community building that is widely appreciated by the residents of Roxbury. The facades of three historic buildings are incorporated into one building.

The most characteristic facade from the corner Ferdinand building, which had been vacant for decades, is restored to its former glory as a landmark in the district. The new facades of brick relief connect the craftsmanship of the new and historic buildings in a contemporary manner.The transparent ground level of the stepped building volume creates a sense of openness at street level. The main pedestrian route between the ground floor shops follows the former railway line, recalling the history of Dudley Square.

At 17,000 m², the dynamic, triangular building accommodates all BPS services that were scattered throughout Boston. Consultation rooms and community spaces on the first floor are used by parents, students and staff.

From the roof terrace on the Ferdinand building, visitors and staff can enjoy magnificent views of the Boston skyline.
