Project Description
With the culinary arts classroom at Vista High School, AlphaStudio Design group had the opportunity to remodel a blighted interior space and create a dynamic learning environment to prepare students for a future in the culinary industry. The existing space was an abandoned screen printing class. By demolishing the entire existing interior to studs, the new kitchen and teaching spaces were able to be designed around an efficient circulatory flow, critical for working in a professional kitchen. As accessories to the 1,800 sf cooking space, a sit down teaching classroom space was provided as well as a café space to continue the real world training of the students. In order to create a unique identity for the culinary classroom, a new entry was added, complete with tiered overhangs, patio area for seating, a new door, and widows. The development of the new entry allows the culinary class to have its own identity, yet cohesively integrate with the existing campus. The interior spaces were designed to be sophisticated and mature. Utilizing areas of atypical wall finish and a dramatic soffit, the café exudes a feeling of an upscale coffee house and not that of a high school cafeteria.
