Builder's Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist
The house is carefully sited and set low to blend into the horizontal landscape. Sod roofs reinforce the connection to landscape and individual shed roofs give identity to space as well as local vernacular. The surrounding grain field blends into the perimeter of the house and transparency integrates the indoors with the outdoors. Interior radiant hydronic concrete floors flow freely to unheated exterior concrete porches and terraces. The house orientation takes advantage of passive solar gain in winter with overhangs for shade in summer. Rammed Earth walls are used as an organizing principal and for thermal mass. A ground source heat pump and energy recovery ventilators provide efficient heating and cooling. Reclaimed Douglas Fir is used for soffits and sloped ceilings. Reclaimed stone defines fireplaces and chimneys. Cedar siding/fascia is treated to weather naturally. The project deserves recognition for its sensitivity to the site, low maintenance materials, and sustainability.
