Project Description
This project involved the transformation of an existing chain restaurant into a high-energy tap house. The owner, Redwater Restaurant Group, researched similar concepts in other major metropolitan markets, and decided that a craft beer taphouse was an ideal addition to Grand Rapids. With the property’s location adjacent to the I-96 interchange, the client sought to create a space that would make patrons forget that they are located near a busy highway. They also wanted guests to enjoy different dining experiences with every visit. The program called for an industrial, yet warm design, inspiring our team to find a unique balance between the two.
The project required extensive exterior renovations in addition to major interior renovations in the dining room and bar. Ghafari’s team relocated the bar entirely, and added a three-season room with overhead doors. We began the transformation by selecting a warm and industrial palette of materials, including steel, copper, and wood, paired with strategic lighting to play off the steel bar grate and polished concrete floors. To create a variety of experiences for guests, we incorporated communal tables, cozy booths, banquette seating, a brightly lit four-season room, and an outdoor patio.
Strategic lighting helps to highlight the copper bar and the beers on tap, which is an important visual element to the space. Another unique experience for visitors is the keg room feature, which is displayed with changing colored LED lighting, and can be seen immediately upon entering the restaurant.
On a fast-track schedule, this project was completed in just five months.
