Project Description
Design
Special Focus, Energy Efficiency
The owners of this 13-year-old home had what seemed to be two diametrically opposed goals: Double the size of their kitchen and laundry room, adding 400 square feet of new conditioned space, while significantly reducing their utility bills. To pull it off, builder Jeff Hallquist started by focusing attention on what was behind the walls. The addition is framed with 2x6s (at 24 inches on center), sheathed with Dow structural insulated sheathing, and insulated with BASF comfort foam (2 inches in the exterior walls and 3 1/2 inches under the roof, plus an extra layer of fiberglass insulation under the roof). With the addition of a new HVAC system, the owners saw their heating bills reduced by 40 percent. And they have a nice new kitchen with Naxos Ceramiche tile floors, granite countertops (including an extra thick island top with a double-edge ogee design), and custom overlay cherry cabinets with a mandarin stain and onyx glaze. The focal point is a custom range hood with Enkeboll carving.
